Recently I have decided that I needed something new in my life. When it came to my diet, I had fallen into the same ol’ dull routine. I have become tired of constantly feeling lethargic and uncomfortable with not only my body but also my health. I have tried every diet trend out there, and I decided that what I really need is to adopt a new lifestyle.

For a few years now I have followed Freelee on YouTube, and even though I wasn’t vegan myself, I was enamored with her way of looking at life. Her profile states she makes videos on “minimalism, money-saving, how to build a successful online business, offgrid life, natural medicine, reducing consumption and waste, sustainable building, tree houses, vegan lifestyle, etc.” I found her compassion and message inspiring, and I wished that I could be as committed as she is. Freelee started her channel with the intent of spreading the vegan message and to show how amazing her results were when she transitioned into a plant based diet. Freelee went on to create The Raw ‘till 4 plan and the gist of it being that you eat raw until 4 p.m., but we will get more into that later.

After a lot of research, I have decided to give Freelee’s lifestyle a try for 30 days and share my personal opinions and results. I would like to note that I am a vegetarian so switching to a plant based diet may be a little easier for me.

The basics of this lifestyle plan are that you eat fruit for breakfast and lunch; in fact, you can eat as much fruit as you would like. I am a HUGE fan of eating so the fact that I can eat as much as I would like and it is highly encouraged to do so, well, that’s just beautiful. A high carb low fat diet is perfect for a self-proclaimed pasta and potato connoisseur, such as myself. After 4 p.m., you can have cooked food but after you eat your cooked meal you can’t eat fruit; a large part of this diet revolves around food combining. Freelee has a video that explains food combining a bit more and the link is HERE. The link for the Do’s and Don’ts on Raw ‘till 4 is also HERE.

Week one:

I started the first day off with such a positive attitude and as cheesy as it sounds, excited for the journey. I went to my local Sprouts and stocked up on everything that I thought I was going to need for the week; a bunch of fruit, vegetables and starches took over my kitchen.

I did great the first five and a half days… honestly! I was having fruit in the morning, a big green salad and potatoes for dinner. I felt so accomplished that I managed to be so strict for five days. It wasn’t until I went to a wedding and had a few glasses of wine (which was also cheating, but in my defense, it was free wine.. and vegan!) that I broke down. My intentions were good, out of all the free food that was offered; I filled my plate with a bunch of lettuce and very little dressing. While the salad was OK after a few glasses of wine, my boyfriend’s fettuccini Alfredo was looking so much better than my wimpy salad. That is when I broke. I was surprised how crummy I felt later even though it was only two bites and had only cut dairy out of my life five days ago.

After cheating and feeling so bad it actually inspired me even more to be strict on this diet. I work daily from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. so getting enough fruit in is pretty hard. As a server, we don’t get lunch breaks or any breaks at all for that matter. I think the fact that I don’t get to eat a lot of fruit during the day makes this hard since it’s a key element to succeeding in this lifestyle. Freelee had mentioned that a component of why a lot of people fall off the wagon is because they don’t eat enough fruit during the day so they crave sugar and never feel full.

Some things that have helped me this week were looking up recipes on pinterest and watching other youtubers who eat a high carb diet.  HighcarbHannah and BonnyRebecca are a few other Youtubers who are fun to watch for some recipe inspirations.
The first week has been more of a learning process for me on what to do and how to better succeed at this plan.

    Hi Allison,
I actually wrote a whole book about my experience trying Freelee’s raw food diet–Running in Silence: My Drive for Perfection and the Eating Disorder That Fed It. It will be interesting following your journey trying her diet as well!
