The male empowerment network is an SCC club organized by a group of male students with the goal of helping them to succeed not only in their current classes, but also with a look toward their future.

The network participates in outreach programs such as conferences that introduce students to a university environment, essentially bringing men in search of leadership and guidance together on campus. Last semester members participated in community service events such as World Hunger Day and Feed my Starving children.

Advisor Aaron Taliaferro had a lot of encouraging words to say about the club and the importance of brotherhood.

“The club is a very welcoming and open space, everyone has different personalities and people come from different walks of life and that is what we want it to be about,” Taliaferro said.

The male empowerment club offers men the opportunity to get to know new people and share not only similarities, but also their differences.

“It’s different in a sense it doesn’t come across as, I guess, militant or strict and structured as a lot of other things do,” Taliaferro said. “We get in a meeting and we have a good time but at the same time we also make sure whatever need to be discussed is discusses and whatever plan of action needs to go goes forward.”

Meeting discussions include further plans of action with community work and celebrate any personal achievements, but they never forget to have fun and enjoy their time together.

“Instead of jumping right into the agenda we do what is called dubs and L’s or wins a losses of the last week. So did you do well in a class? Did you get a promotion at work? Did you get a Scholarship? Any of these things or anything else you want to share that wasn’t as positive so we can also be of support in that way and be empathetic in that way,” Taliaferro said. “Then we go into the other details of what past business we’ve dealt with, if we had any events or anything going forward with a plan of action. Then, anything else is open to discussion in the end.”

Campus meetings are on Thursdays at 3 p.m. They also have a sister club called Women’s Rising that help empower women through diversity and pursuing their higher education and career goals.
