Artichokes Conquer Pima Aztecs, 56-20
October 5, 2014
Make that five wins in a row for the Fighting Artichokes, as they continue to pile up points and dominate opponents.
The Artichokes beat up on Pima CC on Saturday night, the 56-20 win on the road indicating just how dominant they were. The team relied almost solely on moving the ball through the air instead of on the ground. Defense for the Chokes was good as well. They applied pressure to the quarterback and did well to cover the receivers of the Aztecs. Pima had difficulty moving the ball, and sometimes only Artichoke penalties were their saving grace, which helped the Chokes build a 42-7 lead at one point. Despite the win, head coach Doug Madoski wasn’t too happy with the end result.
“What’s discouraging about the game is the 20 points at that end of that scoreboard. There shouldn’t be that many points and we have to finish,” Madoski said.
Madoski also mentioned that he wanted to get the second- and third-string players some time on the field to get better acclimated to game time. He said it’s important to keep the bench players sharp, especially when the game is a blowout.
The Artichoke offense moved the ball effortlessly at times, and quarterback Michael Sanders led the aerial assault. Sanders, who struggled early on this season, had seven touchdowns in the game, and made many of them look easy. The Chokes’ receivers and offensive line ripped apart the fragile defense of the Aztecs. Sanders juggled his responsibilities well, as he threw to five different receivers and wasn’t inaccurate too many times.
“The o-line performed really well tonight, probably one of the best games of the year. I barely got hit tonight,” Sanders said.
One of Sanders’ big targets in the game was wide receiver Thaddeus Thompson. Thompson, who wears the #7 jersey, ended the game with two touchdowns that were both were 60 yards or longer. When not streaking towards the end zone, Thompson was an aggressive blocker and got tough when the Chokes needed yards.
“I saw that the corners liked to press a lot, so that means I gotta beat them off the line so I can be open down the field, and that’s what I planned to do tonight,” he said.
The now sixth-ranked Artichokes will host the Bears of Phoenix College for their homecoming game on Oct. 11. The Artichokes will also take aim at their sixth consecutive win on that night.
