The refrain from the Ukraine supporters that showed up over the weekend outside the office of Rep. Andy Biggs, R-Ariz.—was, “Biggs is either for Ukraine, or he’s for Russia.”
A growing Republican chasm over continuing to send US aid to Ukraine is threatening prospects of Congress’ passing additional money to help the country defend its sovereignty against the relentless daily assaults from Russia.
Katrina Schaffner with Ukraine/Arizona advocacy group told Northeast Valley News, “Republican Rep. Andy Biggs has more Arizona constituents that support funding to Ukraine so why won’t he?”
Biggs is the House member who introduced a separate amendment to slash $300 million in arms assistance for Ukraine funding—even though funding has received bi-partisan support.
Despite broad bipartisan majorities in both the House and Senate that, for now, wish to continue funding to Ukraine—in recent weeks, funding has become a hot button political issue and is being used as a bargaining chip in the fight over government shutdowns.
The small group of supporters from around Arizona that lined the street near the office of Rep. Biggs were there to encourage him to change his stance and approve funding for Ukraine and to vote for a new GOP speaker who will also support aid to Ukraine.
Those at the rally were holding flags along the street in front of the Biggs office shouting, “USA stands with Ukraine!”
Biggs did not respond to requests for comment.
