Coronavirus virus confirmed in several other countries including five cases in U.S.

Hospitals may become short on basic supplies as more COVID-19 patients require hospitalization

The United States has five confirmed cases of coronavirus. One each in Tempe, Arizona, Everett, Washington and Chicago, Illinois.

Two are confirmed in California with one in Los Angeles County and one in Orange County.

The first case of coronavirus in Arizona was confirmed by The Arizona Department of Health Services and the Maricopa County Department of Public Health.

The Tempe, Arizona patient had recently return from Wuhan and is affiliated with Arizona State University.

A number of countries have confirmed coronavirus cases. Australia has seven confirmed; Canada has three confirmed; Germany, Malaysia and the Republic of Korea all have four confirmed; Singapore has ten confirmed, and Thailand has 14 confirmed cases.

France has confirmed five cases of coronavirus.

Japan has evacuated approximately 200 Japanese nationals from Wuhan via a government-chartered flight.

Three of the evacuees have tested positive for coronavirus.

There are a total of 11 confirmed cases in Japan.

The United States has evacuated approximately 201 U.S. citizens from Wuhan and are at March Air Reserve Base in California where they will undergo three days of monitoring for the coronavirus before they are allowed to fly home.

Australia, Britain, Canada, Germany, Kazakhstan, Morocco, the Netherlands and South Korea all have plans to evacuate their citizens from Wuhan.

The New York Times (NYT) reports that most of the coronavirus patients outside of China had traveled to Wuhan.

Some patients in Germany, Japan, Taiwan and Vietnam had not traveled to China but were infected while in contact with visitors from Wuhan.

China’s National Health Commission has confirmed 170 deaths and 7,711 cases of coronavirus with an additional 170 cases cured.

China has extended the Lunar New Year Holiday nationwide due to the coronavirus in order to help prevent its spread.

Strict travel restrictions have been enacted throughout China.

Businesses throughout China have closed temporarily due to the coronavirus. Some of these businesses include Disney, General Motors, Google, Honda, Ikea, and Starbucks.

Coronaviruses are part of a huge family of viruses. This family of viruses include the common cold and more serious illnesses.

The first case of coronavirus in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China was confirmed on Dec. 31, 2019. This novel coronavirus (nCoV)—is a new virus strain never before seen in humans.

The World Health Organization (WHO) states on its website that symptoms of coronavirus can include cough, fever and respiratory symptoms with shortness of breath and breathing problems. Severe cases of coronavirus may include pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome, kidney failure and death.

The WHO recommends the following to reduce the spread of viruses:

  • Wash your hands frequently with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
  • Use a flexed elbow or tissue to cover your mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing. Wash hands afterwards and discard tissue.
  • Avoid contact with people who have a cough and fever.
  • Seek medical attention if you have a cough, fever and difficulty breathing. Advise your doctor of your travel history.
  • Cook all eggs and meat thoroughly before consumption.
