SCC provides a creative writing and art contest annually for the Vortex publication which is now open to all SCC students.

Each student can submit up to three entries in art or four entries in writing.

The entry deadline this year is Friday, March 6 by 11:30 pm.

Writings can be in form of poetry, short stories, creative non-fiction (Essay) and one Act Play/ Screenplay with the maximum words of 3000.

Art students may submit three pieces of art, including photographs, two- and three-dimensional art, computer graphics and digital photography.

Students may submit their entries at https://weba.scottsdalecc.edu/forms/vortexcontest and can edit or change their entries until the deadline by deleting their entries and resubmitting them.

Sandra Desjardins, English humanities teacher and the Director of Creative Writing Program created the Vortex contest in 2001.

For about past seventeen years, Vortex has consistently placed first, second, or third in the southwest division https://faculty.scottsdalecc.edu/desjardins/creative-writing/vortex-magazines/.

Last year winners of the Vortex competed with every writer in every literary magazine in southwest division and in 2018, Vortex was placed at second place overall in the Community College Humanities Association, Southwestern Region, 2018 Literary Magazine Competition.

This year, not only the winners will be published but also the Scottsdale Branch of the National League of American Pen Women will give a $500 award to the cover artist of the Vortex, the SCC Student Magazine of Writing and Art.

Winners will receive their awards and writing winners will be announced on the same day at the Vortex Awards Reception at the Indigenous Culture Center ICC-222 on 30th April at 7 pm at the SCC Campus.
