Last time on the ice ASU beat the Miami RedHawks 1-0, capping off a four-point weekend.
But fresh off the bye week ASU (5-6-1 17 points) would face No.4 North Dakota Fighting Hawks (10-4 32 points).
ASU was without their top line center Cullen Potter, who sustained an upper body injury from a hit he took in the Devils last game against the Miami RedHawks, sadly the team announced Tuesday that Potter would get season ending surgery.
Heading into the game North Dakota’s power play was 28.7% which ranks third in the nation.
North Dakota got their first power play just two minutes into the game, as ASU right wing Bennett Schimek went off for slashing. ASU’s penalty kill held strong keeping it tied early.
North Dakota fourth line got the scoring going as defenseman Jake Livanavage delivered a pass down low to left wing Anthony Menghini to make it 1-0 Fighting Hawks.
Halfway through the second period North Dakota’s power play got another opportunity, as ASU defensemen Joel Kjellberg went off for hooking.
That power play was ended 40 seconds in, when freshman Cole Reschny went off for a tripping penalty to make it 4 on 4 for 1:20 before ASU got the man advantage.
Right as Kjellberg’s penalty expired, defensemen Abram Wiebe fired a shot that was tipped by senior center Ellis Rickwood right over the stick of ASU goalie Connor Hasley to make it 2-0 North Dakota.
The score would stay put heading into the first intermission.
North Dakota dominated the first period with two goals on 13 shots, compared to the Devils who managed just five shots on goal.
ASU’s power play got their third chance of the night, eight minutes into the second, as the goalie Gibson Homer took a tripping minor to prevent a breakaway goal.
The ASU power play provided a couple shots on goal but nothing past Homer, keeping it 2-0.
One minute later the Sun Devils finally got on the board left winger Ty Nash fired a shot that was tipped into the back of the net by junior center Sean McGurn. Making it 2-1.
Two minutes after the goal the Sun Devils were put back on the power play after freshman right winger Will Zellers got called for hooking.

The game stayed tied for just 46 seconds as North Dakota freshman right winger Ollie Josephson, found sophomore Cody Croal in the slot for a goal.
Putting North Dakota back up 3-2.
After two periods the Fighting Hawks had three goals on 18 shots, and ASU had two goals on 17 shots.
Seconds into the third period ASU sophomore Noah Powell took a hooking penalty. Giving the No. 3 power play unit in the country their third opportunity of the night.
This time they capitalize; freshman Keaton Verhoeff found some open space in the slot and fired a wrister over the stick of goalie Connor Hasley to make it 4-2.
Three minutes after his goal Verhoeff took a two-minute minor for crosschecking. Giving the Sun Devils their sixth powerplay of the night.
As the power play was expiring Captain Kyle Smolen was pinned against the wall with the puck, somehow, he was able to fire a centering pass to a wide-open freshman Justin Kipkie in the slot who found the back of the net, making it 4-3.
But 52 seconds after the Sun Devils cut the lead, North Dakota defensemen Sam Laurila found his teammate Dylan James backdoor for an easy goal to make it 5-3.

The Sun Devils got one back shorthanded, as senior Johnny Waldron got behind North Dakota’s power play for a breakaway goal to make it 6-4 with 3:27 left.
The Devils being down two goals, decided to empty their net at the three-minute mark, to try and mount the comeback.
With 1:46 left, the Fighting Hawks sealed the victory as freshman Zellers put in the empty netter making it 7-4.
North Dakota’s win puts them at 35 points, which keeps them atop the NCHC eight points ahead of second place Denver.
Meanwhile ASU (5-7-1) falls to sixth place.
Head Coach Greg Powers was disappointed with his defensemen’s performance.
“You know you score four goals at home against that team we got to find a way to win, at the end of the day we were really bad at our net front, our D didn’t protect it and it left Has out to dry and that’s why we lost the game,” Powers said.
The third star was Keaton Verhoef who had a goal and an assist tonight for North Dakota.
The second star was Will Zellers who had two goals and an assist.
The first star was Ellis Rickwood who had a goal and three assists.
