The Chandler Wolves varsity baseball hosted the Perry Pumas varsity baseball for the second-to-last game of the year.
Chandler, celebrating their Senior Night, entered the game with a record of 18-8 while the Pumas entered a record of 6-18-1.
Starting pitcher for the Wolves was right-handed #12 Senior Dylan Lopez, while the Pumas rolled out left-handed #9 Junior Brock Reichwein.
In the top of the first inning, the Pumas went three up and three down with Lopez getting a strikeout, a flyout, and a groundout.
In the bottom half of the inning, Reichwein shut the Wolves down almost by himself, getting a strikeout and picking off a runner at first.
Perry got off to a good start in the top of the second off a 2-2 single from Senior outfielder Alex Lee.
Third baseman Gavin Cram followed with a double down the left field line to bring himself and Lee into scoring position with nobody out.
Perry struck first from a passed ball that allowed Lee to waltz into home plate, giving the Pumas a 1-0 lead in the top of the second.
Lopez was able to reel himself in and get three of the next four batters out, including another nice strikeout.
The next inning and a half were dominated by the mound.
Reichwein, a University of Pittsburgh commit, amassed four punchouts and allowed zero runners on base in the second and third innings, keeping the score 1-0.
Lopez also had a dominant third and fourth inning getting himself three strikeouts and only allowing two base runners.
In the bottom of the fourth inning Junior first baseman Colin Murphy collected the first hit for the Wolves with a single into left.
The single was followed by a throwing error in the next at-bat from the pitcher on a bunt back to the mound that caused the shortstop to come off the bag.
The errors continued with a passed ball, moving the runners into scoring position, and a balk allowed Lee to cross the plate to tie the game at 1-1.
Reichwein settled in and struck the next two batters out and got the third batter to roll over to third base.
In the top of the fifth, Junior Second Baseman Michael Parker, hit a two out double in the gap for the Pumas, followed by a sharp liner that deflected off the pitcher’s glove but still ended in an out at first, stranding Parker.
Leading off the fifth inning for the Wolves, Junior DH Devan Wilson smoked a homer into left center field getting the lead to 2-1.
The top of the sixth inning was just as electric, as Alex Lee launched the first pitch he saw over the right field wall for a game-tying solo shot.
In the bottom of the sixth, Reichwein was replaced by Junior, Adam Kroschel.
Reichwein ended his day with 1ER, 2H, 7K, and only 1BB.
Kroschel retired the first three batters he faced.
The top of the seventh was also uneventful as two of the three batters punched out , and the third batter hit a pop fly to the second baseman.
The Wolves got off to a hot start in the bottom of the seventh with a leadoff double from Lopez.
Devan Wilson was then intentionally walked, and a passed ball allowed both runners to move up a spot on the bases.
With one out and runners on second and third, Senior Julian Rainey took a pinch-hit at bat and came up clutch with a high chopper to the third baseman—scoring the winning run.
The Wolves got the 3-2 win over the Pumas in walk-off fashion.
Northeast Valley News asked Wilson about the homerun in the fifth for his team, “On the pitch I had before, I had a very bad approach on it and so I was just thinking stay up the middle and then swung and blacked out running around the bases.”
Wilson said with regard to his teammates “Every practice doesn’t have to be super serious because of the great guys we have out there but when the time comes around and it’s time to get locked in we are all able to show up and bring what we have to the table.”
Chandler head coach Daniel Vander Valk was very happy to see his guys adjust after going 0-10 to start the game.
“It was kind of an emotional day for us being our senior day. I think some of the guys were trying to do a little too much impressing. As we worked through the game, we just had our guys calm down and start working the ball the other way”.
